'Captain' Cook's priority should be to score runs: Gooch
London, Feb 7(ANI): Former England cricketer Graham Gooch has said that left-handed batsman Alastair Cook must put scoring runs before captaincy as he leads the team to Bangladesh.
Cook has endured a difficult time with the bat in recent months and has been given the added pressure of captaining the side in the absence of Andrew Strauss.
Gooch, who watched Cook develop into one of the country’s most accomplished opening batsmen during their time together at Essex,” said: “Cook’s priority is to score runs, then the captaincy comes after that.”
“I’m not trying to belittle the role but he has to supply his part of the deal. I think opening the batting and captaincy go well together – I quite liked it. Batting first you can set the tone and lead from the front,” Express quoted Gooch, as saying.
He is also confident that Cook can handle the pressures.
“Cook is a good, strong character. There are a lot of things, which go on when you are captain. You not only have to play well, you have to interact with the guys,” Gooch said.
This will be England''s second tour to Bangladesh. The first, in October 2003, is now viewed as an important team-building exercise by the then captain Michael Vaughan, whose side soon went on to win six consecutive Test series, culminating in the 2005 Ashes. (ANI)
