Reports of match fixing by Pakistan players disturbing: Cricket Australia

Sydney, Aug 30 (ANI): Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland has said that reports of alleged Test cricket fixing by Pakistan players in London and Sydney is disturbing.

Cricket agent Mazhar Majeed was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers over an alleged betting scam involving the Pakistan national team.

The News of the World claimed that it paid Majeed for advance details of when three no balls would be played in the latest Lord''s Test, which England won.

Police also questioned three Pakistan players over the alleged scam and detectives confiscated mobile phones of Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Pakistan''s captain Salman Butt.

Sutherland said on Monday he would not make further comment about January’s now suspect Sydney Test, in which Australia scored a remarkable comeback from behind victory over Pakistan, until he gets findings from investigations underway in London.

Responding to reports of a betting scandal, he said: “The reports from the UK are most disturbing and we look forward to the outcome of rigorous investigation by the UK authorities as well as by the ICC.”

“It is critical for cricket that the public has confidence in the integrity of the outcome of games, which is why CA and other ICC members have supported the significant world cricket investment in anti corruption over the last decade or more,” he said.

“We have no knowledge of the current allegations but by their very nature, they demonstrate the absolute importance of world cricket maintaining its vigilance in relation the anti-corruption. As Lord Condon, the founder of the ICC anti-corruption process has always said, that vigilance can never be relaxed,” he said.

Sutherland said CA had harboured no suspicions about the Sydney Test against Pakistan at the time. (ANI)
