The future of Bangladesh and India, to some extent, in this world cup depended on the England-West Indies tie played in Chennai today.  Having done extremely well in their last 3 matches, West Indies only needed to win this match to not only enter the quarters, but also ensure India and Bangladesh qualified without any effort and in the process, send England crashing out of the 2011 edition.  All eyes were on Kieron Pollard who has been reasonably successful in this cup till date.  During the West Indies chase, though England were hit by the Gayle storm initially, they strongly came back into the match and ensured their quarter final hopes are alive when they saw Pollard’s back much to their delight.

For the Windies, it was Andre Russell’s show in bowling as well as bowling.  If he had a role in putting brakes on England’s hurricane start aided by Trott’s cameo who kept finding the boundary on the trot initially, he had a bigger role to play in the later part of the match.  It was a see-saw battle throughout England’s innings.  Whenever England looked like walking away with the match, Russell stuck.  Alongwith Bishoo’s magic, Russell ensured in the beginning as well as the end of England’s innings, the West Indies will be chasing a reasonable target.  Everytime his skipper looked at him, he dealt a blow to the English side to finish with impressive figures of 4 for 49 and thus became the wrecker in chief of the English batting.  As if this was not enough, his timely innings of 49 brought the Windies close to victory inspite of their wickets falling in a heap in the middle of their chase, bringing back glimpses of the Indian batting fiasco against the South Africans.

It was a match full of quite a few interesting moments and could have been won by either of the teams at different times.  But it was England who had the final laugh and will not be taking the British Airways flight immediately.  Thanks to England’s inconsistent display throughout the group stages, this world cup has been one of the most interesting.  Their win has once again thrown the Group B wide open.  Now, India and Bangladesh have to wait atleast till Saturday to know their fate and if required, India has to wait till they win their Sunday’s match.  For the Windies, Russell stepped in when Pollard failed.  The question is, can India depend on their all-rounders in their current form to play such vital roles in the matches ahead?  We need such brilliant performances by either both or one of our all-rounders if India are to progress further in this world cup.  The nation’s hopes no doubt hinge on Yuvraj and to some extent on Yusuf Pathan who must have watched this match with keen interest.  There is no doubt they are capable of such contributions.  But will they when the time comes?  Can they play the dual role to telling effect?  The nation is eagerly waiting for their Jugalbandhi!

 If India’s progress is undecided till now, it is due to their disappointing performance or to put it right, patchy performance.  Now is the time to wake up and it is now or never for India.  India, the champions in the hearts of billions are still fighting to stay afloat, while most of the Test playing nations are already in quarterfinals.  This is a pathetic situation, considering India were the strong favourites till a few days ago.  But today, it is difficult to convince somebody India are the favourites, thanks to their own making.  All India need to do now is to win four matches at a stretch.  We certainly have the ammunition.  It is the time for our heroes to show the world they are not only IPL, but world cup heroes as well. 

Indian fans have suffered enough and 28 years have been too long a wait!
